CAPE DUTCH TOWN HOUSE ARCHITECTURE

blettermanshuis.jpg

BLETTERMANHUIS

This building was one of the original Cape Dutch style houses the first settler's built in Stellenbosch near Cape Town, and shows the typical hol-bol gables, with some curves outward and others inward. An architects delight. Visit ARCHITECTCAPETOWN for more photos of historical buildings in the region.

LA GRATITUDE

The two entrance doors either side of a central window are unique, and give this buildings it's special charm. The panes of the cottage windows are very small being 6 by 8 per window. Visit GLITZYMAGAZINE for more like this.

VREDELUST

Vredelust is an unusual Cape Dutch house with a apron of beams and columns in more of a modern sensibility. The lacey edging to the roof softens the facade. Go to ARCHITECTCAPEDUTCH for more pictures.

RHENISH

Originally a parsonage for the local clergy when it was built, the stunning little Cape Duch gem is now home to a miniature toy museum. See GLOSSY-MAGAZINE for other great images of this architecture style.

LIBERTAS PARVA

The flat arches and timber shutters give this

house its unique charm. Located in the historical Bird street in Stellenbosch. You might also like ARCHITECTCAPEDUTCH, so click on the link.

STONEWALL

The wall is actually not made of stone, but bricks painted white like many of the other Cape Dutch "werf" walls. The cellar shown here is actually the most visible from the R44 road, and has a stunning gable with garland type decorations on it. Visit ARCHITECTCAPETOWN for modern Cape Dutch designes.

WEBERSBERG

The decidedly H-shaped house at Webersberg farm has a very heavy baroque gable with sweeping curled plaster bands over the gable.

The side-by side type cottage windows, all have green shutters. The house is set on a steep slope and a large staircase leads to the plinth that levels the house. Go to ARCHITECTCAPETOWN for other popular residential home styles.

PETER FAULKE

This immaculately kept gable is in the neoclassical style. The original thatch roof has been removed and replaced with a very suitable charcoal colored corrugated metal one.  Also see CAPETOWNSPLENDOUR for other architecture attractions in the Cape.

NEDERBURG

The house is shaded by large maple trees. The light yellow walls and darkly

varnished windows and doors make the home distinguished. A lovely example of this form of architecture. Click on ARCHITECTCOMPANIESCAPETOWN to see other Cape Town styles.

RUSTENBERG

The original rough plasterwork has made it through the ages, and so has the thatch roof and red plinth, thanks to a non-interference style restoration. The protruding middle section is neoclassical in style. The green and white windows are free of shutters, also making it a decidedly photogenic building.  See RESIDENTIAL-ARCHITETS for sister style called "Cape Vernacular architecture."

MORGENSTER

This is one of the finest examples of the baroque period at its height. The swirling gable, garland, and shell shape on the gable, exemplify the style. A decorative timber insert in the fanlight also adds character to the front facade. See CAPEGLOSSY for more sightseeing attractions in Cape Town.

RUST EN VREDE

The original door has been replaced with seamless glass, and this juxtaposition of a modern element with the heritage base, is what architects live for. See TOP-ARCHITECTS for more inspirational architecture photos.
